Creating percussion rhythms from a single drum hit is a common approach. However, simply programming a pattern is not always enough to create a realistic rhythm. One way to to add a human/live feel is to use velocity. Experiment by setting each drum hit in your MIDI with a different velocity value. Doing this will help to replicate the natural feel of a live drummer in your recording.
