Audiotent Tip 343. Choosing Your EQ.
There are many different choices when it comes to choosing an EQ for your sound. Shelving, Graphic, Parametric etc.
Each one has it’s own advantage and disadvantage. It can be easy to fall into the trap of visual mixing with today's modern EQ’s. Pulling up a parametric eq and dialling in a curve that you think will work rather than using your ears.
Next time you pull up an EQ, try using a vintage emulation EQ that doesn’t have a visual representation of its curves (SSL-G Equaliser, Neve 31102 etc). This will force you to use your ears and will lead to better mixing decisions.
