Tremolo is one of those FX that sounds best on sustained sounds. Try this out on your synth pads, strings or noise effects. First, insert a tremolo plugin and match the phase of both left and right channels. Next, automate the depth of the effect towards the end of the phrase. This will add extra interest and dynamics in your track.
A good tip is to sync the rate speed to match your project tempo. 16th or 8th usually work best.
