Sharp or spiky transients can often take way too much headroom in your mix as well as sounding harsh and unpleasant at loud volumes.
Make sure you have them under control by using a fast limiter or transient designer. Saturation and overdrive could also work wonders, but be cautious about the extra harmonics these processors will add to the signal.
