Lennar Digital Sylenth1 is my go-to piece of software for sound design in my tracks. When designing leads or basslines, be sure to add some final touches to your sound by trying some of the onboard fx.
Sylenth1's distortion module can add that extra gritty harsh element you might be lacking, or even to pump up its overall volume.
Additionally, Sylenth1 has a nice chorus mode, I use this a lot with my leads. This adds some subtle movement and originality to the sound as a whole.
