Removing any unnecessary sub frequency rumble from elements that don't need it seems like common advise. This works great for creating space in the mix for your kick and bass.
However, cutting excess high frequencies is as important to keep your mixes from sounding thin or harsh. For example, apply a low pass eq to sounds that occupy the same frequency as your hi-hats.
