A sine wave is a great waveform to use for your sub-layer. However, the sine wave doesn't have any upper harmonics and can get lost on smaller speakers, laptops, phones etc.
To combat this , apply distortion/saturation to the sine wave. This helps to create those harmonics that are needed to translate onto these smaller systems.
