Make sure you use frequencies of musical notes to your advantage. When boosting, aim for those frequencies that align with notes inside the key signature of your track. When cutting, do the opposite, by removing the frequencies that are not in key.

There are now a variety of modern day plugins that allow you easily visualise the frequencies for any given note.
